The media in today’s society, everything has to be politically correct.
If you slip one time in the newspaper, television or radio it could mean your job.
Harmless jokes and comments now days are taken out of context and often people take it way to serious.
Recently ESPN analyst and one of the hosts of Pardon the Interruption (PTI), Tony Kornheiser, was suspended from the show for making comments about a co-worker.
Kornheiser was talking about co-worker, Hannah Storm, and saying that her outfit was “horrifying.” Also he was joking around that she was too old to wear flashy clothing.
Although Kornheiser was trying to grab some laughs from his audience, ESPN did not find it funny and suspended him from the popular sports show PTI.
If anyone knows the talkshow host, they know that he says all kinds of funny things about people, ages, culture, outfits and most of all he laughs and jokes about himself.
When I heard the comment myself, I laughed, then found pictures of her outfit and laughed more.
But I feel as a journalist it is getting more difficult to voice opinion about individuals because some may get sensitive.
I feel like the first Amendment has somewhat gone out the window and we always need to be politically correct.
My personality is just like Kornheiser’s in the fact that I love to joke around and have a good time. Make people laugh by making fun of myself and others.
I do believe in the rule that everyone’s mother told them when they were young, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all,” but if things are said in all good fun then it shouldn’t be a big deal.
I’m sure if ESPN didn’t suspend Kornheiser for the comment then nothing would have happened. People would have laughed and the whole situation would have been overlooked, but ESPN drew attention to it.
I think if comments are racial or discriminating towards a person, and then yes, of coarse suspensions should be made, and maybe jobs should be lost.
But don’t make the writers bite their tongue because we will never know or hear the full potential of the stories, scoop and opinions.

I AGREE WITH YOU BUT TO SOME EXTENT....YEA ITS ALL FUN AND GAMES WHEN SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE, BUT IF ITS YOUR CO HOST, THEN I DONT KNOW...I THINK HE TOOK IT WAY TO FAR TO SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT TO HIS CO HOST IN FRONT OF LIVE TELEVISION....PLUS HIS CO HOST IS A WOMAN...YOU DONT REALLY SAY THAT TO WOMEN IN FRONT OF THEIR FACE AND LIVE TV BECAUSE IT LOWERS THEIR SELF ESTEEM AND CAN EMBARRASS THEM IN FRONT OF MILLIONS OF VIEWERS...HE COULD HAVE PROBABLY TOLD HER OFF THE CAMERA, MAKING IT LESS DRAMATIC...ITS ALL FUN AND GAMES IF YOU TALK ABOUT EVERYONE ELSE EXCEPT YOUR CO HOST WHO IS A WOMEN...AND THAT IS JUST MY POINT OF VIEW SINCE I'M A GIRL MYSELF....
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment. But to clarify, he made his comments on his radio show in the morning. He didn't do it to her face and on live t.v. Yes live radio, but the radio show doesn't get the fan base that Sports Center gets. I understand it was somewhat unprofessional, but again, we are given this right to freedom of speech and if we cant use it, then why have it all?
ReplyDeleteI AGREE...WE NEED OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH...BUT BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE IT...IT CAN HURT YOUR LOVED ONES....THANKS FOR THE CLARIFICATION ;D
ReplyDeleteI also agree to a point. freedom of speech is something you both know i strongly support with my outlandish comments and my personality in general. but my reaction changed when i found out that is was not on live television and it was stated during his show on the radio. personally i think that he was in the wrong by doing it on the radio. by throwing a low blow at a co-worker on a separate stage other than where the two of them are employed, makes me question his integrity and is not something a professional should do. if on the other hand, he were to make those comments on live television this situation would have been blown over and would have been a non factor probably enabling him to keep his job. oh and this is Wesley, but i have to do it thorough frankies email lol
